Paul Carberry
Hailing from one of the fore-most racing families in Ireland, Paul Carberry, born on 9 February 1974, is the son of jockey Tommy Carberry, who was a famous National Hunt jockey in the 1960s and 1970s. His uncle is Arthur Moore, one of Ireland’s leading National Hunt trainers and his younger siblings, Phillip and Nina, are also successful Irish riders.
His first win came in 1990 on Petronelli when he was apprenticing for Jim Bolger. Carberry learned his trade through hunting, show-jumping and point-to-pointing in Ireland and along with Ruby Walsh and AP McCoy, he is one of Ireland’s leading jump jockeys.
A specatular jockey, in 1993, on board Rhythm Section, Carberry won the Champion Bumper, his first win at the Cheltenham Festival. And six years later he had, what is arguably the biggest win of his career, his first Grand National win with Bobbyjo.
When asked about his most memorable sporting moment to date he said; “Personally by far it has to be the English Grand National, it was a dream I held from being a youngster and to date is still my greatest achievement and to win on a horse trained by my Dad made it extra special.” And always the good brother he also added “Watching Nina go up the hill in front of me to win on Dabiroun at the Cheltenham Festival in 2005 – her first win in Cheltenham, she was brilliant.”
Paul Carberry has raced in 17 previous Grand Nationals and in 2011 finished 10th on Backstage for Gordon Elliott. In 2012 he partnered the much fancied Chicago Grey, again for trainer Gordon Elliott, but was brought down at fence 5.
He renewed that partnership with Chicago Grey for 2013 and despite going much further than the previous year, he had to pull-up at the very last fence.
For 2014 Paul Carberry has been confirmed as the jockey for one of the favourites, Monbeg Dude who is trained by Michael Scudamore.
