Grand National Runners 2022
Runners & Riders | Saturday 9th April 2022
Ran straight into the history books in 2021 when winning the Grand National with Rachael Blackmore on board. As a result, Minella Times will have to carry over a stone more than last time. Making it unlikely we’ll see a repeat performance in 2022.
NO. 1 | JOCKEY: R. BLACKMORE | FORM: 221-FP | WEIGHT: 11-10 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: H DE BROMHEAD

Went off as one of the race favourites in 2021 and had a great race under jockey Mark Walsh, finishing third. Could go well again but he’ll be carrying more weight this year.
NO. 4 | JOCKEY: M WALSH | FORM: 13-961 | WEIGHT: 11-08 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: T WALSH
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Has a great record, from 10 starts over fences, has won two and placed in eight. Has a really good chance of running a solid race.
NO. 11 | JOCKEY: B POWELL | FORM: 23-122 | WEIGHT: 11-04 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: C TIZZARD
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Winner of the Becher Chase in 2021, so we know she likes those Grand National fences. However, but being a grey horse and a mare means the historical trends are against her. Nevertheless, one of the more interesting options in the race and she’s more than capable of pouncing at Aintree.
NO. 31 | JOCKEY: A. COLEMAN | FORM: 46-111 | WEIGHT: 10-09 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: C. LONGSDON
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Lightly chased but does seem to do better in the longer distanced races. A good weight and has never fallen, pulled-up or unseated his jockey.
NO. 10 | JOCKEY: D. O’KEEFFE | FORM: 31-717 | WEIGHT: 11-04 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: M BRASSIL
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Is having a great season and is proven over the distance of the National, has a solid each-way chance but has to make the cut first.
NO. 39 | JOCKEY: T. BELLAMY | FORM: 8-F312 | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: E LAVELLE
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
A decent chaser who beat Tiger Roll to the post in the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham, disappointing many racing fans. However, he’ll have the crowd behind him at Aintree.
NO. 2 | JOCKEY: JACK KENNEDY | FORM: 3-4661 | WEIGHT: 11-09 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Finished the season last year with a second place finish in the Irish Grand National. The kind of horse that goes better on heavy ground. May need a bit of rain to take his chances.
NO. 5 | JOCKEY: DAVY RUSSELL | FORM: 2-2122 | WEIGHT: 11-07 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
From 10 chase starts, has won twice and placed eight times, so definitely a consideration for an each-way bet.
NO. 23 | JOCKEY: CONOR ORR | FORM: 23-735 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: C. MURPHY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
He had a shot at the Irish National last year but never looked like getting involved and was pulled up. Was narrowly beaten by Any Second Now in the Bobby Chase in February. Definitely worthy of consideration.
NO. 15 | JOCKEY: AP HESKIN | FORM: 23P-82 | WEIGHT: 11-01 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
One of just three grey runners that will run in the Grand National 2022 and after a long break returned to racing this season, winning at Cheltenham in December. Is that one race enough prep for Aintree?
NO. 33 | JOCKEY: C DEUTSCH | FORM: 2U9P-1 | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: V WILLIAMS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Just made the cut to run in the Grand National 2022 and has enough class to warrant a second look given his win last time out at Ascot.
NO. 40 | JOCKEY: H. NUGENT | FORM: -37231 | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: H DALY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
From 10 chase starts, has won twice and placed eight times, so definitely a consideration for an each-way bet.
NO. 3 | JOCKEY: S FLANAGAN | FORM: 43-61P | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: N MEADE
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
He was a firm favourite in 2021 and despite a great race didn’t have it in the tank to challenge Minella Times and finished in 4th place. Another runner who could reward each way backers.
NO. 8 | JOCKEY: P TOWNEND | FORM: 24-323 | WEIGHT: 11-05 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: W MULLINS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Plenty of boxes ticked with this horse – right age, weight, never fallen, unseated or pulled-up however, has very little experience beyond three miles so the distance is a big question mark.
NO. 16 | JOCKEY: D. JACOB | FORM: -31217 | WEIGHT: 10-13 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: N TWISTON-DAVIES
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Winner of the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase in November 2020, Cloth Cap was a very exciting prospect and went off as the 2021 favourite. However, he didn’t finish the race and pulled up at the 28th fence. Will he do better in 2022?
NO. 30 | JOCKEY: T SCUDAMORE | FORM: P-46R3 | WEIGHT: 10-10 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: J O’NEILL
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
A long distance chaser who won the Scottish National last season. Form has dipped since, but if he finds his groove on the day he could threaten.
NO. 29 | JOCKEY: DEREK FOX | FORM: 21-4PP | WEIGHT: 10-10 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: L RUSSELL
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Finished in 7th place in this race last year but has only run twice this season. If he is back on form he could do even better this year.
NO. 21 | JOCKEY: BJ COOPER | FORM: 257-52 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: P NOLAN
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
In February, he won the Grand National Trial Handicap Chase at Punchestown and finished sixth in the Ultima at Cheltenham. If he is on his game, it would not surprise me if he placed.
NO. 37 | JOCKEY: J. GAINFORD | FORM: 6-5716 | WEIGHT: 10-07 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: G ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
A handy chaser that has been notching up the wins over the last couple of seasons but largely at 3 miles. Does he have the legs for the marathon Aintree course?
NO. 12 | JOCKEY: D. BASS | FORM: 3U-112 | WEIGHT: 11-03 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: K BAILEY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Top Ville Ben appeared to take to the famous fences in the Becher Chase at Aintree in December before making a terrible error. An error free round is required now.
NO. 22 | JOCKEY: T DOWSON | FORM: P5F312 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: P KIRBY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Was second in the Scottish Grand National last year and has done ok this season. Will carry less weight than his recent runs so that will help boost his chances.
NO. 25 | JOCKEY: R. MANIA | FORM: 12-435 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: S THOMSON
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Was third in the Gold Cup in 2020 but has never quite regained that kind of great form. The distance will be the biggest test and the weight of 11-06 won’t help his cause much either.
NO. 6 | JOCKEY: H. COBDEN | FORM: P-15P8 | WEIGHT: 11-06 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: C TIZZARD
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Definitely a Cheltenham horse and one that has run in the Gold Cup multiple times. However, his form has dipped in the past couple of seasons. If he can find his mojo at Aintree, he’d be in with chance.
NO. 13 | JOCKEY: N SCHOLFIELD | FORM: 3P-428 | WEIGHT: 11-02 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: P GUNDRY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Stunned everybody when he romped home as the 150/1 winner of the Irish Grand National in 2021. But was it a fluke? or can he add the Grand National to his tally?
NO. 26 | JOCKEY: R DOYLE | FORM: 1-46UP | WEIGHT: 10-10 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: D McLOUGHLIN
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Stepped up to Grade 1 level at Cheltenham and was outclassed and generally runs at 2m5f so the distance may be a problem.
NO. 9 | JOCKEY: D. O’REGAN | FORM: 13-117 | WEIGHT: 11-05 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Was out of action for quite a while and only made his seasonal return in February, his first run since October 2020. His current form looks streaky however.
NO. 19 | JOCKEY: ADAM WEDGE | FORM: 4P/2-4 | WEIGHT: 10-12 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: E LAVELLE
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Returned to Newbury on March 5th for his first race since November 2020. Is a very consistent horse that has never fallen, pulled up or unseated his rider. Distance may be an issue but he has previously won at Aintree.
NO. 20 | JOCKEY: J. BOWEN | FORM: 2/37-4 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: B PAULING
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
A young horse with one win under his belt and that was in a small race. Cannot see him causing any surprises on the day.
NO. 28 | JOCKEY: S. WALEY-COHEN | FORM: 469P29 | WEIGHT: 10-10 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: E MULLINS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Running in the colours of the legendary Trevor Hemmings, Deise Aba is definitely worth consideration for a long shot each-way bet. Was second in the Pertemps at Aintree in November and has really stepped up in distance this season. If he can stay out of trouble he could place.
NO. 34 | JOCKEY: T. O’BRIEN | FORM: P-22P2 | WEIGHT: 10-08 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: P HOBBS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
The veteran has shown there is still plenty of fire left in his belly with two impressive victories at Haydock this season. He ran a huge race to finish a 50-1 sixth in last year’s National.
NO. 35 | JOCKEY: H. SKELTON | FORM: 6-511P | WEIGHT: 10-08 | AGE: 13 | TRAINER: D SKELTON
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
His level of form really doesn’t cut the mustard these days and he looks like a non-stayer on paper.
NO. 14 | JOCKEY: S. BOWEN | FORM: 602803 | WEIGHT: 11-01 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: G ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
By Grand National standards, he’s a youngster, but has experience over longer distances, doesn’t have a win to show for it. Little chance of that changing in the National.
NO. 18 | JOCKEY: JONJO O’NEILL JR | FORM: 46P644 | WEIGHT: 10-13 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: G ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Aiming to run in his fourth Grand National having placed 4th in 2018, 5th in 2019, 2020 was cancelled, pulled up in 2021 so can he make the places again in 2022 – could go either way!
NO. 24 | JOCKEY: L DEMPSEY | FORM: -39098 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 12 | TRAINER: A MARTIN
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Returned this season after nearly two years on the sidelines. Ran three races, and didn’t perform well in any of them, pulling up in the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham. Just doesn’t have the form this season.
NO. 36 | JOCKEY: R POWER | FORM: 43/00P | WEIGHT: 10-08 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: H DE BROMHEAD
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Funnily enough Agusta Gold is owned by Randox boss Dr Peter Fitzgerald. They couldn’t could they? Unlikely.
NO. 32 | JOCKEY: D MULLINS | FORM: 0-8PP2 | WEIGHT: 10-09 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: W MULLINS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Unseated his rider at Cheltenham in the Glenfarclas Chase but was enjoying a decent enough season otherwise. A possible dark horse.
NO. 7 | JOCKEY: B HAYES | FORM: 2333PU | WEIGHT: 11-06 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: W MULLINS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
A fourth place finisher in the Becher Chase in December, he has stamina but lacks pace, so he is often a distance behind the winner.
NO. 38 | JOCKEY: H BANNISTER | FORM: 1-P420 | WEIGHT: 10-07 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: S CURRAN
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Just made the line-up for the 2022 Grand National on the last day but has very little experience beyond 3m. Pulled up in March at Uttoxeter over 4m2f so stamina is questionable.
NO. 17 | JOCKEY: P ARMSON | FORM: B143-P | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: D. PIPE
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Ran in last year’s Grand National and was the last finisher home in 15th place. Has done nothing this season to suggest he could have any kind of a chance here

People will tell you that picking a 2022 Grand National winner is a lottery, they’ll say that on the day any one of the 40 runners could win. In some respects that statement is true, the National remains one of the most open races in the world. In fact, the first-ever winner (1839) was called ‘Lottery’, appropriately enough.
But this belief isn’t borne out by the stats. In fact, by looking down the list of winners over the past 40 years – you can spot patterns that will help narrow the field of runners down to a shortlist of entrants who have the right stuff to triumph at Aintree.
We’ve put together a list of the key traits which many Grand National winners display. Of course, every few years a horse will come along and rip up the form book. So if you want to back a horse on the best horse racing betting sites, then make sure you whittle down your selections to help find a winner.
