Grand National 2023
Aintree Grand National | Saturday 15th April 2023
Was third in the Grand National last season and was back with a bang winning at Punchestown in November before winning the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham. Can he go two places better and win it this year?
NO. 7 | JOCKEY: KEITH DONOGHUE | FORM: 3-1361 | WEIGHT: 11-04 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT

Another superstar from trainer Willie Mullins but will Gaillard Du Mesnil run at Aintree after his winning performance in the National Hunt Novices Chase at Cheltenham? The Irish Grand National is also an option.
NO. 13 | JOCKEY: PAUL TOWNEND | FORM: 3-2131 | WEIGHT: 11-00 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: W MULLINS

Unlikely to really make an impact in the 2023 Grand National. Has won one beginners chase (in March) and has only started at more than 3m once. May take his chances in the Irish Grand National.
NO. 25 | JOCKEY: RACHAEL BLACKMORE | FORM: 20-241 | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: H. DE BROMHEAD
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Has won the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham two years in a row and, after a decent show in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, looks like a serious contender. Distance could be an issue, so will he be the winner of the 2023 Grand National?
NO. 26 | JOCKEY: DEREK FOX | FORM: U1-541 | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: L. RUSSELL

Moved from Henry De Bromhead to Willie Mullins a year ago, rested for summer and has returned this season with two starts. Brought down in the first but has done much better since, finishing second over 3m5f at Warwick and 3rd at Cheltenham so stamina not an issue.
NO. 28 | JOCKEY: BRIAN HAYES | FORM: RP-B23 | WEIGHT: 10-04 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: W. MULLINS

Winner of last year’s Grand National making history as the first 7-year-old to win the race since 1940. High hopes for a repeat win in the 2023 Grand National.
NO. 2 | JOCKEY: SEAN BOWEN | FORM:
-P1134 | WEIGHT: 11-11 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: E MULLINS

Was having a great season with two wins before finishing third in the Coral Welsh National in December. However, he fell last time out at Leopardstown so as long as that didn’t dent his confidence, he ticks a lot of boxes for the 2023 Grand National.
NO. 5 | JOCKEY: AIDAN COLEMAN | FORM: 6-113F | WEIGHT: 11-05 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: P. FAHEY
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Went off as one of the race favourites in 2021 and 2022 but was pipped to the post both times. Could go well again in 2023 but top weight will be tricky to overcome.
NO. 1 | JOCKEY: MARK WALSH | FORM: 12-241 | WEIGHT: 11-12 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: T WALSH
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
With ten chase starts and nine wins or places, this is a horse to keep in mind for an each way chance. A handy 3-miler, let’s hope he has the stamina to go the full distance.
NO. 15 | JOCKEY: HARRY SKELTON | FORM:14-112 | WEIGHT: 10-11 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: D. SKELTON

Lightly chased and still a novice but Capodanno is making all the right noises. However, has only had one run this season, finishing 3rd of 4 runners and was well beaten.
NO. 6 | JOCKEY: DANNY MULLINS | FORM: 2U4-13 | WEIGHT: 11-05 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: W. MULLINS
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Narrowly beaten by Kemboy at Fairyhouse in the Bobbyjo Chase last time out and a decent run last year at Cheltenham and Vanillier starts to tick a couple of boxes for the 2023 Grand National.
NO. 23 | JOCKEY: SEAN FLANAGAN | FORM: -636F2 | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G. CROMWELL
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Finished 6th in this race last season so can definitely get around the course and navigate the tricky obstacles, can he do better in 2023?
NO. 12 | JOCKEY: JJ SLEVIN | FORM: -P16U1 | WEIGHT: 11-00 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: M BRASSIL
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
There’s a reason Galvin was handed near top-weight, he is an exceptional chaser and finished second to Delta Work in the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham. His weight will be his only obstacle.
NO. 3 | JOCKEY: DAVY RUSSELL | FORM: -61462 | WEIGHT: 11-11 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Has been on a roll this season winning at both Ascot and Kempton however, they were both at 3 miles and realistically he has never been tested beyond that distance. Despite this, is still a well fancied runner.
NO. 35 | JOCKEY: S TWISTON-DAVIES | FORM: 135-11 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: S. THOMAS

This is definitely a cross-country horse so has stamina in bucket loads. Always does better at Cheltenham in the winter rather than at the Festival but that could have something to do with carrying a lot less weight which bodes well for his Aintree trip.
NO. 39 | JOCKEY: ADAM WEDGE | FORM: -9231P | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: M. KEIGHLEY

One of the most experienced chasers running in the 2023 Grand National, Roi Mage has 23 wins or places from 38 starts, racking up nearly £850K in the process. Can go the distance and will carry less weight than normal so a definite each-way consideration.
NO. 19 | JOCKEY: FELIX DE GILES | FORM:
7-33F2 | WEIGHT: 10-08 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: P. GRIFFIN

Young and heads into the Grand National 2023 on the back of mixed form, which includes pulling up in back-to-back races but then winning at Fairyhouse. Will carry a lot less weight than normal and did finish 6th in last year’s Irish Grand National so can dig deep when the occasion calls for it.
NO. 24 | JOCKEY: DARRAGH O’KEEFE | FORM: -0PP12 | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: T. GIBNEY

A surprise to many, he actually finished in 8th place in last year’s Grand National. Was having an okay season before winning last time out in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown. Never write off horses who’ve previously run in and finished the Grand National!
NO. 11 | JOCKEY: HARRY COBDEN | FORM: 8-9441 | WEIGHT: 11-00 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G ELLIOTT

Was 4th at Aintree back in November in the Grand Sefton and is usually in the money so could be one for each way consideration.
NO. 9 | JOCKEY: SEAN O’KEEFE | FORM: 242343 | WEIGHT: 11-03 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: J. HARRINGTON

Ran in last year’s Grand National but unseated his jockey after a stumble at the first fence so connections sent him to the Irish Grand National the following week where he finished 9th. Nothing this season indicates he will do any better this time around.
NO. 27 | JOCKEY: SIMON TORRENS | FORM: 9-0006 | WEIGHT: 10-05 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: C. MURPHY

Nicky Henderson’s only entry in the 2023 Grand National and so his only chance to finally win the race. However, this horse has never won a chase but did do well to earn a 3rd place finish last time out at Cheltenham over 3m6f so has stamina when it counts.
NO. 29 | JOCKEY: NICO DE BOINVILLE | FORM: 20-223 | WEIGHT: 10-04 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: N. HENDERSON

Great chase record with two wins and six places from ten starts. Ran at Cheltenham but didn’t make an impact in the Ryanair Chase. Could go either way in the Grand National 2023.
NO. 4 | JOCKEY: JONJO O’NEILL JNR | FORM: -31336 | WEIGHT: 11-06 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT

2nd place in the Welsh Grand National in December and The Big Breakaway proved he can go the distance but can he do it again at Aintree?
NO. 17 | JOCKEY: BRENDAN POWELL | FORM: 3P-22P | WEIGHT: 10-10 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: J. TIZZARD

Confidence in a horse’s ability always dips when you see RR on their form. Refusing to race at Punchestown in November puts a big question mark over Dunboyne’s chances. It may just have been a blip and he did redeem himself last time our at Cheltenham. But is it enough?
NO. 36 | JOCKEY: JACK TUDOR | FORM:
6R1P24 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: G. ELLIOTT

My long shot pick for the 2023 Grand National, Eva’s Oskar was 4th in the Eider Chase at Newcastle (4m1f) last time out, ran back-to-back races at Cheltenham to finish and 2nd and 1st in November and December and in two of those races carried nearly 2 stone more than he will at Aintree. Ticking a lot of boxes!
NO. 34 | JOCKEY: ALAN JOHNS | FORM:
-62164 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: T. VAUGHAN

The 2023 Grand National will be the biggest race of this chaser’s life and nothing in his form suggests he will make an impact, sadly.
NO. 40 | JOCKEY: PHILIP ENRIGHT | FORM: 353050 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: P. GILLIGAN
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Was 7th in the Becher Chase in December so can jump the fences and get around the Grand National course. He then had wind surgery and first race back was 10th from 10 runners and a long way off the winner. If his form improves he could do ok but unlikely to win it.
NO. 31 | JOCKEY: RYAN MANIA | FORM:
2U-370 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: S. THOMSON

Has stepped up to three mile races this season but other than a 3rd place finish last time out at Naas, hasn’t really sparkled in any of them. On the plus side, will carry a lot less weight than usual which can only help.
NO. 32 | JOCKEY: PETER CARBERRY | FORM:
515683 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: H. De BROMHEAD
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
Was on flying form in 2021, winning novice chase after novice chase then after winning at Perth in June 2022 wasn’t seen again until March 25th 2023, barely making the qualifying criteria to even run in the 2023 Grand National.
NO. 22 | JOCKEY: THEO GILLARD | FORM:
121-17 | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: D. McCAIN

Won a handicap chase at Aintree last season but hasn’t done much this season to suggest he could be a threat in the 2023 Grand National. The distance looks too much for him.
NO. 8 | JOCKEY: JONATHAN BURKE | FORM: 1-35P5 | WEIGHT: 11-04 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: A. HONEYBALL

Was out of action for nearly three years and only returned to racing in December 2022 with a so-so performance. However, a month later in January 2023, he was a winner at Gowran Park.
NO. 10 | JOCKEY: MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN | FORM:1U/014 | WEIGHT: 11-01 | AGE: 11 | TRAINER: W. MULLINS

Was out for more than a year before making his seasonal return at Haydock in February where a decent performance saw him take 3rd place in the Grand National Trial. Is it enough to expect a solid run at Aintree?
NO. 30 | JOCKEY: CHARLIE DEUTCH | FORM: 1P9-3P | WEIGHT: 10-04 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: V. WILLIAMS

Has spent most of the season running at three miles, unsuccessfully with no wins or places from those races. Is young and has time to improve but unlikely to make an impact in the Grand National 2023.
NO. 21 | JOCKEY: SHANE FITZGERALD | FORM:
64P03P | WEIGHT: 10-06 | AGE: 7 | TRAINER: J. O’BRIEN

Ran in last year’s National but unseated his jockey. Finished 4th in the Becher Chase so can get around the fences but then pulled up in the Coral Welsh National so maybe the distance is just too much.
NO. 38 | JOCKEY: HUGH NUGENT | FORM:
U-44P5 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: H. DALY

Despite his long odds, Recite A Prayer does quite well in the longer distance races. Did well in both the Kerry and Cork Nationals (2nd and 3rd place) but then could only finish the Becher in 12th place. That said, he was carrying a stone and a half more and still got around the Grand National course.
NO. 33 | JOCKEY: JACK FOLEY | FORM:
102300 | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 8 | TRAINER: W. MULLINS

A stayer who has never pulled up or unseated a jockey in his career however, while he can go the distance, he usually doesn’t finish in the money in the longer races.
NO. 20 | JOCKEY: KIEREN BUCKLEY | FORM: 0-9220 | WEIGHT: 10-08 | AGE: 9 | TRAINER: N. MEADE
Check out the latest Grand National promotions from leading bookies.
This is a horse that has done pretty well career wise however, this season isn’t the best with the chaser finishing 5th of six runners at Naas over a distance fo just 1m7½f. Doesn’t bode well for the Grand National which is over four miles long!
NO. 14 | JOCKEY: LP DEMPSEY | FORM:
233154 | WEIGHT: 10-13 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: J. O’BRIEN

Wasn’t having the best season anyway but was in the front three at the Glenfarclas Chase at Cheltenham when he refused to jump the last fence. Was outclassed by Delta Work and Galvin anyway.
NO. 37 | JOCKEY: BEN JONES | FORM:
20005R | WEIGHT: 10-02 | AGE: 10 | TRAINER: P. BOWEN

A chaser far more comfortable running in two milers and made no impact on his only two starts at 3m. The distance of the 2023 Grand National will be his toughest obstacle.

A few years ago the queues outside the bookmakers would stretch down the high street on the day of the Grand National. Thankfully, today we can avoid the queues by using online bookmakers.
The bookmakers we feature are licensed, regulated. Plus when you sign-up you can also benefit from offers and promotions. They also have other gaming sections which often includes a no deposit casino, slots section, lottery games plus a huge range of sports betting markets.
You might ask ‘Who is the best bookmaker?‘ Well, it all depends on what type of bet you want to place, the size of the bet and other considerations like what bonus bet deals are being offered (if any).
For the average person, a bookmaker like Paddy Power is also going to be a good option. Firstly their website is easy to use, joining only takes a minute and you can fund your account using a variety of different methods.
Secondly, Paddy Power usually pays out enhanced places on each-way bets (please check the number of each-way places offered by your bookmaker).
