McCoy Shortlisted For BBC SPOTY

It was announced today that ten contenders have been shortlisted for the 60th BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, to be held on December 15 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

The Sports Personality of the Year 2013 shortlist expert panel included Director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater, BBC head of TV Sport Philip Bernie, Executive editor of BBC Sports Personality of the Year Carl Doran and Mark Pougatch from BBC Radio 5 live.

For 2013 they were joined by three newspaper sports editors – Alison Kervin (Mail on Sunday), Adam Sills (Daily Telegraph), Dominic Hart (Mirror) and three former Sports Personality nominees – Baroness Grey-Thompson, Dame Kelly Holmes and Marcus Trescothick along with Sue Barker and the chief executive of UK Sport, Liz Nicholl.

Jockey AP McCoy, who won the award in 2010, is one of the 10 shortlisted and he joins the Wimbledon Champion, Andy Murray, who finished in third place in the 2012 renewal.

Athletes Mo Farah, Christine Ohuruogu and Hannah Cockroft are included along with cyclist Chris Froome.

Golfer Justin Rose, sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, cricketer Ian Bell and rugby union player Leigh Halfpenny also make the list.

As is tradition, the public will vote for their favourite on Sunday, 15 December with voting for the main award by phone and, for the first time, online during the programme, which will be presented by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan.

With some remarkable sporting achievements accomplished by the illustrious list, the voting is anticipated to be close though Andy Murray loos like an early front-runner.

Murray ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men’s singles winner but his competition includes Chris Froome who ruled in cycling’s Tour de France, AP McCoy who rode an unprecedented 4,000th winner Ben Ainslie who helped mastermind an America’s Cup sailing victory and Christine Ohuruogu who regained her world 400m title.

In addition to the main prize, there will also be seven other awards:

  • Team of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Overseas Sports Personality of the Year
  • Young Sports Personality of the Year
  • Sports Personality of the Year Diamond Award
  • Helen Rollason Award
  • Sports Unsung Hero
