non-runnerWith a guaranteed line-up spot for the 2013 Grand National, Beshabar looked like the biggest hope Welsh trainer Tim Vaughan had got to win the biggest race in the world. The only problem was that Beshabar hadn’t run since November 2011 so form, although it was pretty decent before the prolonged break, was sketchy at best.

Now 11-years old, Beshabar came to prominence when he won the Scottish Grand National in April of 2011 and hopes were very high that a repeat performance could be on the cards for Aintree in 2012 but he was subsequently sidelined with a tendon injury since finishing fifth in the Hennessy Gold Cup in November 2011 and it now all hinges on whether or not Vaughan can get him ready for Aintree without the benefit of a prep race.

He has been lightly raced in chases having only run in six of them to date but the distance does suit him and he’s more than capable of going the 4m – at least he was two years ago – and the ground at Aintree should be perfect for him.

BHA Handicapper Phil Smith measured his OR at 143, which is down from where he finished in the Hennessey at 150 hence the reason he’s been given only 10-09 for the National. And speaking recently his trainer said of him “He’s coming along well. We’d like to have a prep run but we always knew we wouldn’t have enough time to do that after his tendon strain.

“It’s not going to be an easy task to get him there absolutely super primed but hopefully we’ll get a racecourse gallop into him, or possibly two if we can, and take him straight to Aintree.”

Unfortunately on March 26th 2013, connections announced that Beshabar had sustained an ankle injury that Vaughan stated the following on his website “It is with regret that I have to inform everyone that our Grand National hope Beshabar was found to have heat in a front fetlock joint this morning.

“Following discussions with our vet, Tim Beauregard, we have taken the decision to take Beshabar out of training and he will therefore be scratched from the Grand National.”
