Aintree Racecourse Deeds Auctioned for £6,800

A few weeks back I brought you news that the original deeds to the Aintree Racecourse were going up for auction at Liverpool auction house Cato Crane on March 5th and they did and the fetched the princely sum of £6,800.

Dating all the way back to 1838, the leather-bound charred documents, were recovered from a solicitor’s office after it was bombed during World War II and contain the names of the 40 shareholders of the Liverpool-based Aintree Racecourse Company.

The deeds had been valued at between £7,000-10,000 but ultimately went for £6,800 with auctioneer John Crane adding that the name of the vendor could not be revealed but he believed the deeds would remain on Merseyside.
