Roberto Goldback

Roberto Goldback was entered for the National in 2012 but following a hefty weight of 11-04 by the BHA Handicapper, the Nicky Henderson trained horse was subsequently withdrawn. Back again in 2013 and 11 years old, he was given another shot at the Grand National and had faired just slightly better by getting 11-02 to run off before the weights were increased by 4lbs which meant that he carried 11-06 which may have given connections second thoughts.

At the time the 11 year old had an Official Rating of 155 which contributed to the weight but it was not likely to be an issue as he frequently ran with more, in fact it’s nearly always over 11-10.

He was the sole Seven Barrows representative after Shakalakaboomboom was ruled out of the race due to a setback and was really prepped during the season with five races under his belt before the national, the first of which resulted in a win at Ascot back in November 2012.

Following on from that though he unseated his rider and finished 5th twice so his form was not consistent and his odds moved out with every race having previously been so short that at one stage he was the ante-post favourite for the 2013 Grand National.

With 27 chase starts in his career, Roberto Goldback had won four times, finished second five times and third five times.

He went off at 25/1 but jockey Barry Geraghty couldn’t get the job done and at the 30th fence, Roberto Goldback unseated him and didn’t finish the race. He’ll be 12 years old when the 2014 Grand National rolls around which may be too old for a horse who hasn’t displayed any real form when it comes to this race so that may have been his last attempt.
