National Prize Fund Increased

The 2011 Grand national had a whopping £950,000 prize pot up for grabs but this year that’s increased even more with the addition of a further £25,000, after Aintree racecourse and John Smith’s, the race sponsor, announced an rise on Thursday, bringing the overall total up to a massive £975,000 for 2012.

Based on these kind of figures, the 2013 renewal of the world’s most famous steeplechase could be the first million-pound National Hunt race and unlike previous years where it was the first eight passed the post that got a share, this year prize money will also be paid to the ninth and 10th-placed finishers for the first time.

“We are delighted that we have again managed to increase the prize fund for Britain’s biggest jump race, the John Smith’s Grand National,” Julian Thick, Aintree’s managing director, said. “[We are] one step closer to our goal of achieving a £1m race in the future.”

It’s a far cry from when winner Party Politics earned his owner £99,943, 20 years ago, in the 1992 Grand National!
