2025 Grand National Weights Are Out – But Who Topped The List?
The great and the good assembled on Tuesday 11th February for the big reveal of the 2025 Grand National weights that have been allocated to this year’s Aintree race.
Willie Mullins has acknowledged the challenge ahead for I Am Maximus, as last year’s Grand National winner has been assigned top weight, of 11-12, for this year’s race on April 5th.
The nine-year-old will carry 6lbs more than when he claimed victory at Aintree in 2024 under Paul Townend and finds himself at the top of the list, reflecting his new rating of 167.
The last horse guaranteed a place in the 34-runner field is Senior Chief, trained by Henry de Bromhead.
He sits 33rd on the list with a weight of 10st 10lb and a rating of 151.
As it stands, one of the runners assigned 10st 9lb – and there are eight of them – will make the final lineup, depending on the ratings closer to the time of the race.
Key Contenders in the Lineup
Among the other leading entries are Royale Pagaille (11st 9lb, rated 164) and L’Homme Presse (11st 8lb, 163), both trained by Venetia Williams.
The latter is expected to run in the Ascot Chase this weekend before a decision is made on his Grand National participation.
2023’s second-place finisher Vanillier (10st 6lb, 147) and Delta Work (11st 2lb, 157), who was second in 2024, are both set to return.
Minella Indo, a former Gold Cup winner, and last year's third place finisher, is also in the mix.
Despite the significant rise in the weights, I Am Maximus remains one of the favourites for the race at odds of around 9-1.
If he can win again, he will become the first back-to-back Grand National winner since Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019.
That said, as soon as the weights came out, Inothewayurthinkin went straight into pole position with the bookmakers and is currently as short as 8/1 ante-post.
The Handicapper

BHA handicapper Martin Greenwood framed this year’s Grand National weights by comparing I Am Maximus to past winners.
“He’s been given an 8lb higher mark this time. In 2024, he won off the same rating as Tiger Roll did in 2019 and was just 1lb below Many Clouds when he won in 2015.
“Many Clouds ran off 166 the following year, and I Am Maximus is now rated 167.
“If he wins again, he’ll set a record for the highest winning mark in the 21st century.”
Is It McManus' Race To Lose?
JP McManus looks to have a strong hand in the 2025 Grand National, with several top contenders already guaranteed a place in the field.
After winning last year’s race with I Am Maximus, he has another serious chance of success, with Inothewayurthinkin, Capodanno, Chantry House, Perceval Legallois, Fakir d’Oudairies, Iroko, and Limerick Lace all making the cut.
I Am Maximus carries top weight, but his class is proven, while Inothewayurthinkin and Perceval Legallois bring strong form.
McManus has won the National twice before, and with so many contenders, he could easily add a third victory in 2025.
The bookmakers clearly think so with the first three in the betting all McManus runners.

Conclusion
So there you have it, the full list of Grand National 2025 weights from top to bottom. With very little controversy, and none that look to be overly penalised, most trainers appear happy with the outcome.
How that will translate over the next few weeks with the upcoming Cheltenham Festival and the various scratching stages, remains to be seen.
With only 34 places up for grabs in 2025 it's going to be an interesting run up to April 5th.
