For the first time, the Grand National in 2024 will only have 34 official runners. The announcement to reduce the field from 40 runners was made in October 2023 as part of the measures implemented to improve race safety.

The fight for a place in the line-up came down to the wire, with Kitty’s Light sneaking into the last spot following the withdrawal of Conflated at the last declaration stage.

And with that, the final runners were declared. As we all know, the horses need riders, and if you want to know who the Grand National jockeys are for 2024, the complete list is below.

So here we go…

Winning Jockeys Riding Again

Only two of the jockeys booked this year have previously won the Grand National. Can they do it again??

DEREK FOX

Last year’s winner on Corach Rambler and looking for a third win is Derek Fox. He notched up his first win on One For Arthur in 2017 and, six years later, returned to the winner’s enclosure after another race of a lifetime.

Riding for trainer Lucinda Russell again, connections will be hoping the winning duo can bag the most difficult of feats, back-to-back wins, with race favourite Corach Rambler on Saturday.

He may have the experience and know the course like the back of his hands, but it’s still anybody’s race.

RACHAEL BLACKMORE

Rachael Blackmore is looking for her second win since riding home victorious on Minella Times in 2021.

It would be an incredible feat and one not achieved by many jockeys over the history of the Grand National if she were to win again.

In 2024 she will partner Minella Indo, for trainer Henry De Bromhead.

Debut Jockeys In 2024

With fewer chances to be picked this year, it’s a surprise to see so many jockeys making their Grand National debut in 2024.

All of them have had great career wins to date, and now they want to add the biggest of them all.

  • Caoilin Quinn – Nassalam
  • Gina Andrews – Latenightpass
  • Lucy Turner – Chambard
  • Ben Harvey – Mahler Mission
  • David Maxwell – Ain’t That A Shame
  • Gavin Brouder – Foxy Jacks
  • Danny Gilligan – Chemical Energy
  • Sam Ewing – Galvin

So can a jockey making their debut in the 2024 Grand National actually go out and win it?

David Mullins did just that on Rule The World in 2016 for trainer Mouse Morris, so nothing is impossible.

Female Jockeys In 2024

There are three female jockeys taking part in the race this year.

Rachael Blackmore will be riding 2021 Gold Cup winner Minella Indo for Henry De Bromhead.

Gina Andrews has been will be on the Tom Ellis trained Latenightpass.

An incredible story, Andres is married to Ellis and the horse was bought and raised by his mother.

A PTP champion trainer, when it looked like Latenightpass might actually have a shot at the national, Ellis quickly got his trainers licence.

So not only is it Gina Andrews’ first ever ride in the race, but it’s the first ever entry for the trainer too.

And joining Rachael Blackmore and Gina Andrews will be Lucy Turner.

She has been booked on Chambard for Venetia Williams, the trainer she has worked for since she was thirteen years old.

The duo of Turner and Chambard already won the Becher Chase at Aintree in December, their fifth win together.

Youngest and Oldest Jockeys To Win The Grand National

The youngest jockey to have ever won a Grand National at Aintree is Bruce Hobbs.

He won the race in 1938 at the age of 17, riding a horse named Battleship. Battleship was also notable as he was the first American-bred horse to win the Grand National.

The oldest jockey to have ever won the Grand National at Aintree is Dick Saunders, who won the race in 1982 at the age of 48, riding the horse Grittar.

Saunders was a popular jockey and his win on Grittar was particularly memorable as the horse was an outsider and not considered a serious contender by many.
