Grand National 2024 Weights Revealed – Is There A New Favourite?

weights

The great and the good assembled in St George’s Hall (Liverpool) on Tuesday 20th February for the big reveal of the weights that have been allocated to this year’s newly revamped Aintree Grand National.

Martin Greenwood, the British Horseracing Authority’s Chase Handicapper has hailed this year’s list of Grand National entries as “strong on quality” and went on to say:

“With the reduction in field size to 34 runners this year, I would stand by my original advice that a rating of at least 145 is what you need to line up on the day.”

He continued: “While there are slightly less horses rated 155-plus this year, the band of horses rated 150-154 remains strong and I think this year’s race looks strong on quality.

“There are horses that still need to fulfill all the qualification requirements by March 26th.

“These include Le Milos and 11 Irish-trained entries, with the main reason being they have not had the necessary six runs over fences.”

Top Weight For 2024

Trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon admitted his horse Hewick “probably deserved” to be given top weight for the Grand National 2024 after Greenwood handed him a rating of 169 and 11st 12lb to carry.

The nine-year-old is bidding to become the first horse for 90 years – since Golden Miller in 1934 – to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season.

He already has the King George under his belt this term.

However, bookmakers aren’t overly convinced by Hewick’s chances in April and make the famous €850 purchase a general 33/1 chance in the betting.

Previous winner

Scottish handler Lucinda Russell landed the world’s greatest steeplechase for a second time last year when Corach Rambler triumphed at Aintree, six years after One For Arthur took the spoils in 2017.

Russell confessed that she would love to eclipse former trainer Jenny Pitman’s two victories in the race with Corbiere in 1983 and Royal Athlete in 1995.

Corach Rambler has been rated 159 and given a weight of 11st 2lb as he bids to retain his crown, with Russell admitting: “I’d say that’s in line with our expectations.”

Russell’s partner Peter Scudamore is adamant that Corach Rambler’s chances of repeating last year’s Aintree feat will not be hindered by a run in National Hunt’s most prestigious race, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, in March.

Corach Rambler is a general 14/1 shot in the betting village to repeat last year’s feat.

Outsider To Follow

If you see a horse that is trained by Willie Mullins and owned by JP McManus, your ears surely have got to prick up and they have one such horse together in this year’s race.

A horse that can complete an Irish-English National double comes along once every Preston Guild, but I Am Maximus (11st 2lbs) could well be that horse in 2024.

Formerly owned by the now-deceased Claudio Michael Grech, I Am Maximus started this season with a surprise win in the Drinmore Chase at Fairyhouse in December before going really well in his next two outings behind Galopin Des Champs – including in the Irish Gold Cup. Those are all seriously strong form lines.

The eight-year-old is an even better horse at longer distances, as displayed in his hard-fought Irish National victory, and he surely represents value at odds of 25/1 in the betting.

Undoubtedly though, those odds will plummet if his good form continues for the rest of the season. Except this horse to be a hotly-tipped favourite over the coming weeks.

Suggested bet: I Am Maximus @ 25/1 E/W

Conclusion

So there you have it, the full list of Grand National 2024 weights from top to bottom. With very little controversy, and none that look to be overly penalised, most trainers appear happy with the outcome.

How that will translate over the next few weeks with the upcoming Cheltenham Festival and the various scratching stages, remains to be seen.

With only 34 places up for grabs in 2024 it’s going to be an interesting run up to April 13th.
