Weights For 2023 Grand National Revealed

The BHA Handicapper has revealed the weights for the 2023 Grand National, with Any Second Now from trainer Ted Walsh, Conflated from trainer Gordon Elliott, and Hewick from JJ Hanlon being handed top weight at 11-10 each.

These three entries have been rated at 167 and are considered the best horses entered in the race.

Following closely behind them on the list are Galvin (11-11), Noble Yeats (11-11), Envoi Allen (11-08), and Royale Pagaille (11-08).

Last year’s winner, Noble Yeats from trainer Emmett Mullins, will be carrying a full 15lbs more than when he won last year and has been rated at 166. Despite this, he still has a chance to win back-to-back Grand Nationals after his win in the Many Clouds Chase in December.

Eight Withdrawals Since Entries Revealed

Since the entries were revealed two weeks ago, eight horses have already been withdrawn, leaving 77 entries for the next stage of the 2023 Grand National proceedings.

Henry de Bromhead announced the retirement of Minella Times due to a setback. De Bromhead expressed his disappointment, stating that he had hoped to give the horse another chance at the Grand National but decided to retire him instead.

Fiddlerontheroof (IRE), Grumpy Charley (GB), Iwilldoit (GB), and Riders Onthe Storm (IRE) have also been scratched from the race.

Additionally, Chemical Energy (IRE), Nearly Perfect (GB), and Minella Crooner (IRE) did not qualify for the race.

As a result, 77 horses are left to proceed to the next stage of the 2023 Grand National.

How Important Is Weight In The Grand National?

The Grand National is a unique race in which horses are handicapped, meaning they can all carry different weights.

The purpose of handicapping is to balance out the field and give each horse an equal chance of winning.

Horses that are faster or better jumpers are given more weight to carry in an attempt to level the playing field.

The handicapper calculates how much weight to add to each horse’s saddle based on their form and rating.

For the Grand National, the maximum weight is 11st 10lbs, while the minimum weight is 10st 2lbs, regardless of the horse’s rating.

Moving Forward

So, with the entries submitted and the Grand National weights released, what’s next for the 2023 Grand National?

The first scratching deadline will be on March 7th at noon, though little activity is expected at this stage as horses with known injuries usually drop out.

The more interesting second scratching deadline will be on March 28th at noon. This deadline serves two purposes: firstly, it is the cut-off date for qualification, and secondly, it follows the Cheltenham Festival which could impact horses’ decisions to run at Aintree.

The five-day confirmation stage for the 2023 Grand National is on April 10th at noon, followed by the final declaration stage at 10am on April 13th.

Finally, the much-anticipated Grand National Day will take place on Saturday, April 15th, 2023 at 5.15pm.
