Grand National 2021 Gets 106 Entries
This is where the road to Aintree begins – the entries. Every year we wait for the end of January to roll around to find out just how many hopefuls have been given the green light. For this year and the 2021 Grand National, it is 106. And unsurprisingly, Tiger Roll heads the list as he bids for his third consecutive win in the famous race.
So how does that number of 106 compare to previous years? It is just one more than the 105 entered in 2020. Although that renewal didn’t go ahead, many of the same names are hoping to finally take their chances on Saturday April 10th 2021 at 5.15pm.
In comparison to 2019, the figure is down slightly from the 112 entered that year. But really, the numbers are fairly consistent. That means we have a few exciting weeks ahead of us as the weights are revealed and the scratching stages take place.
Grand National 2021 Entries
So which potential runners have made the list and which are notable by their absence? First up is Tiger Roll who looks set to bid for a third win, equalling that of the great Red Rum. However, I wouldn’t be rushing to get a bet on him just yet. No sooner had the entries been released and Tiger Roll connections were already touting the Irish Grand National as a more likely option!
Bristol De Mai and Presenting Percy have both been given the green light. And while we’ve seen Bristol De Mai on the list three times previously, 2021 looks likely to be his first attempt at the race as he has since been scratched from the Gold Cup.
Presenting Percy, also scratched from the Gold Cup, is another highly rated contender. On the same Official Rating as Tiger Roll (168) they are just one notch below Bristol De Mai (169) and two below Santini (170).
But we all know that weight is a major factor in the National. The better the horse the higher the weight. So often it is those runners much further down the list that achieve more on race day.
From that perspective, the likes of Pym, Kimberlite Candy, Potters Corner, and Cloth Cap all look to be in good shape. However, we won’t know the exact weights until February 16th when they are revealed live on Racing TV.

The Scratching Stages
Now that we know we have 106 entries the next stage is the weights. Normally these are revealed at a fancy lunch with all of the trainers and owners. However, this year that is changed due to restrictions. Instead, the BHA Handicapper will reveal them live on Tuesday, February 16th on Racing TV. So we all find out at the same time.
From the weights, the horses will be ordered from the highest weight to the lowest. The maximum is 11stone 10lbs and it is allocated to the highest-rated horses entered. In this case, it looks like Santini, though the Handicapper does have some discretion.
We then wait for the first scratchings deadline on 2nd March. Nothing generally happens at this stage as connections are waiting to see how their runners fair at Cheltenham.
The second scratchings deadline is the 23rd of March and the five-day confirmation stage is the 5th of April. With just days until race day, the final declaration stage will be on the 8th of April.
