65 Remain In 2014 Crabbie’s Grand National

At the five day declaration sage of the 2014 Crabbie’s Grand National, just eight runners have been withdrawn. There were few surprises as at least four of the non-runners had already been talked about as withdrawals by connections over the last couple of weeks with Alan King the most recent, yesterday, to advise that Godsmejudge would not go to Aintree.

On Saturday Jonjo O’Neill had talked about Sunnyhillboy’s lack of sparkle and last week Enda Bolger had declared Mossey Joe as a non-runner.

With both the Gigginstown House Stud duo of Roi Du Mee and Bog Warrior having just run at Navan on Saturday it was also unlikely that they would go to Aintree a week later and the booking of Aidan Coleman on The Rainbow Hunter had suggested that the Venetia Williams trained Katenko would also be an unlikely runner.

The only surprise withdrawal was Same Difference, who earlier in the week had been backed to as short as 33/1 with Paddy Power. Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, the two time Grand National winning trainer, he was his only remaining entry this year and off the back of a fifth place at Cheltenham had looked primed to tackle the Aintree fences.

So with 65 now still in contention, only 40 can run and those that have now been propelled into the starting line-up include Raz De Maree, Rose Of The Moon, Shakalakaboomboom, Alvarado, Last Time D’Albain, Lost Glory and One In A Milan with Goonyella now the first reserve.

The eight horses withdrawn are:

  • Same Difference
  • Katenko
  • Roi Du Mee
  • Bog Warrior
  • Goulanes
  • Mossey Joe
  • Godsmejudge
  • Sunnyhillboy
